For a standard video thumbnail, use a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, a 16:9 aspect ratio, and keep the uploaded file within the 50 MB desktop limit.

What changed and when
The current guidance dates from an announcement at the end of October 2025. YouTube raised the desktop upload allowance and introduced the higher recommended resolution above. The reason given was that more viewing now happens on television screens.
Guides published before that change state the older resolution and the older size limit. Those figures were the recommendation for years, so articles written before it can look authoritative and still be describing a specification that no longer applies. When you compare advice from different sources, check whether it was written before or after October 2025.
What most guides get wrong
Three of the top-ranked guides for this exact question, checked against the Help page on 2026-08-29:
Swipe sideways to see every column
| Fact on YouTube Help | What the guides say | Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended resolution 3840 x 2160 | All three print the older 1280 x 720 figure | 3 of 3 wrong |
| 50 MB from a computer | All three give the older 2 MB figure as *the* limit | 3 of 3 wrong |
| The limit depends on the upload route: desktop or mobile | None of the three distinguishes them | 3 of 3 silent |
| JPG or PNG | screensnap: "JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP". flowshorts: "JPG, GIF, PNG". thumbnailcreator: "JPG, PNG" — correct | 2 of 3 wrong |
| Minimum width 640 pixels | screensnap and flowshorts state it — correct. thumbnailcreator: "Not stated" | 1 of 3 silent |
| Shorts resolution 2160 x 3840 | screensnap: "1080 x 1920". thumbnailcreator: "1080 × 1920 px". flowshorts says custom Shorts thumbnails cannot be uploaded at all, which stopped being true | 3 of 3 wrong |
| Podcast playlist thumbnails are 1:1 | None of the three mentions podcast playlists | 3 of 3 silent |
| A vertical video with a 16:9 thumbnail is replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 | None of the three mentions it | 3 of 3 silent |
Eight facts, three guides, twenty-four chances to state something YouTube publishes. Twenty-one are wrong or absent, and the two most consequential — the resolution and the size limit — are wrong on all three.
File size limits
Desktop uploads have one limit for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails alike: 50 MB.
Mobile uploads apply a separate, much smaller limit to video thumbnails. Podcast thumbnails uploaded from mobile allow 10 MB, so podcast artwork has its own mobile allowance rather than the video-thumbnail one.
The route you upload by therefore decides which limit applies to the same file: an image accepted on a laptop can be refused on a phone without anything about the image changing. Your file must be JPG or PNG, and your account must be verified before you can upload a custom thumbnail at all.
This is also the most common reason a thumbnail "will not change" — a refused file leaves the previous image in place. What is actually documented about a thumbnail that does not update is a shorter list than most troubleshooting pages suggest.
Cases that are not a 16:9 video
Shorts use a vertical layout, so prepare the artwork at the Shorts resolution in the table rather than designing a landscape image and cropping it. Shorts have a second rule that catches people out: a custom Shorts thumbnail can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, which means the desktop limit is the only one that ever applies to them.
A vertical video with a landscape custom thumbnail runs into a specific rule: when a vertical video has a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube replaces it with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages.
Podcast playlist thumbnails are the other exception. They use a square 1:1 aspect ratio, which means a design laid out for a widescreen frame will not sit correctly inside it.
What the size does not decide
Getting the file right is necessary and it is not sufficient. Two further rules apply to every custom thumbnail regardless of its dimensions.
It has to follow the Community Guidelines. A thumbnail that breaks the thumbnails policy is removed, and the removal can carry a strike. A thumbnail that is merely not appropriate for all audiences, without breaking the guidelines, can be removed or lead to an age restriction with no strike attached — YouTube says it tells you when it removes one, so you can upload another.
Having a custom thumbnail at all is the part that correlates with performance. YouTube's own tip page states that 90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails. That is the strongest published figure on the subject, and it is about presence, not design.
Questions people actually ask
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be in 2026? 3840 x 2160 pixels, 16:9, minimum width 640 pixels.
Is the 2 MB figure the mobile limit? Yes, and only that. From a computer it is 50 MB — twenty-five times larger. Guides that give a single number are quoting the mobile limit without saying so.
Why do so many guides still give the old numbers? Because they were correct for years and the change is recent. The announcement was at the end of October 2025; articles written before that date describe the previous specification accurately, and articles written after it often copied them.
Does a bigger file make a better thumbnail? No. The recommendation is a resolution, not a file size to aim for. The example on this page is 3840 x 2160 and 1.37 MB, which is well inside the desktop limit.
Can I upload a GIF or a BMP? The Help page names JPG or PNG. Several guides list GIF and BMP; they are not on YouTube's current list.
Do I need a verified account? Yes, for any custom thumbnail. Without verification the upload control is not offered.
Should I test two thumbnails against each other? You can, on ordinary videos, and it is worth knowing before you start that YouTube's own test decides on watch time rather than clicks.
