YouTube thumbnail not updating: what YouTube documents

Thumblify Team

6 min read

If your new thumbnail has not appeared, YouTube's own documentation gives you exactly one sentence about waiting: "It may take time for your thumbnail changes to appear on YouTube." No number is published — not two minutes, not an hour, not twenty-four. Every specific figure you will read on this subject was invented by the page you read it on.

There is one stale-thumbnail case YouTube documents properly, and it is the one most guides miss: when the old image keeps showing on Facebook or X, the cached copy belongs to those platforms, not to YouTube, and each has a tool that refreshes it immediately.

Five facts, three guides, fifteen chances. Thirteen are wrong or missing — and the first row is the one worth pausing on: all three pages state a propagation time to the minute for something YouTube has never published a figure for. Three sources, three different invented numbers, ranging from two minutes to twenty-four hours.

What to do with this

Check where you are looking before you change anything. The single documented cause of a stale thumbnail is an external cache on a platform that is not YouTube. If the old image is on a Facebook post or an X card, use the tool for that platform and stop.

Do not re-upload as a first move. The advice to upload a different image and switch back appears in several guides and is supported by nothing. If the file was accepted, YouTube has it.

Check the file against the current limits, not the old ones. A rejected upload is a real cause of "the thumbnail did not change", and the numbers most guides quote for this are five years out of date — the current figures are 3840 x 2160 and 50 MB from a computer, and GIF and BMP are not on YouTube's list of accepted formats at all.

Confirm your account is verified. Custom thumbnails require it. An unverified account does not get an error that says "unverified"; it gets no upload control.

Give it time without a stopwatch. YouTube declines to state a figure, so anyone quoting one is guessing. If a change has not appeared and the file was accepted, waiting is the documented answer.

Questions people actually ask

How long does a YouTube thumbnail take to update? YouTube does not say. The Help page states only that it may take time. Any specific figure — 2 minutes, 1 hour, 24 hours — is somebody's estimate presented as a specification.

Will clearing my browser cache fix it? It will fix what *you* see, if the stale copy is in your own browser. It changes nothing for anyone else, and it is not a fix YouTube documents.

Why does the old thumbnail still show on Facebook? Because Facebook cached it. Paste the video URL into Facebook's Sharing Debugger and the cached copy is replaced immediately. YouTube states plainly that it does not control this.

My thumbnail changed on the video page but not in search. Why? YouTube publishes nothing about different surfaces refreshing at different rates, so nothing here can tell you a duration. What it does say applies: it may take time.

Could my thumbnail have been removed rather than not updated? Yes, and that is a different situation with its own notice. YouTube removes thumbnails that break the thumbnails policy and tells you when it does, so you can upload another.

Does the size limit depend on the device? Yes, and this is the most common cause of a file being refused: 50 MB from a computer, 2 MB from a phone. The same image can be accepted on a laptop and rejected on a phone.
