For a Shorts thumbnail, YouTube documents 2160 x 3840 pixels at 9:16, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Custom Shorts thumbnails can be added only in YouTube Studio on a computer, and the account has to be verified. Because a computer is the only place you can do it, the limit that applies is the desktop one — 50 MB, not the 2 MB figure written on nearly every guide about this.
The second rule catches people who design landscape first: a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail gets replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages.

What most guides get wrong
Three of the top-ranked Shorts-thumbnail guides, checked against the Help page on 2026-08-29:
Swipe sideways to see every column
| Fact on YouTube Help | What the guides say | Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| 2160 x 3840 | CapCut: "1920 x 1080 pixels with a 9:16 aspect ratio". YTThumbnailGrabs: "1080px x 1920px". GrowthOS: "1280x720 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio)" | 3 of 3 wrong |
| 9:16 | YTThumbnailGrabs: 9:16 — correct. GrowthOS: 16:9. CapCut says 9:16 while giving 1920 x 1080, which is 16:9 | 2 of 3 wrong |
| Only in YouTube Studio on a computer | CapCut: "can only be edited or changed using the YouTube mobile app (Android/iOS), not via YouTube Studio on desktop" — the exact opposite. YTThumbnailGrabs: "on both mobile and desktop". GrowthOS: describes Studio on desktop — correct | 2 of 3 wrong |
| The applicable limit is 50 MB, because desktop is the only route | CapCut: "should not exceed 2MB". YTThumbnailGrabs: "Max Size 2MB". GrowthOS gives both limits — correct | 2 of 3 wrong |
| JPG or PNG | CapCut: "JPG, PNG, or GIF". GrowthOS: "JPG, PNG, GIF". YTThumbnailGrabs: "JPG/PNG" — correct | 2 of 3 wrong |
| Minimum height 640 | None of the three states it | 3 of 3 silent |
| Verified account required | None of the three states it | 3 of 3 silent |
| A 16:9 thumbnail on a vertical video is replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 | None of the three states it | 3 of 3 silent |
Eight facts, three guides, twenty-four chances. Twenty are wrong or absent. The single worst is CapCut's, which tells the reader to do the job in the mobile app and states that YouTube Studio on desktop cannot do it — while the Help page says a computer is the only place it can be done at all.
What to do with this
Design at 2160 x 3840 from the start. Not 1080 x 1920, and certainly not a landscape frame you intend to crop. The minimum height is 640, so an image below that is refused outright.
Do it on a computer. There is no mobile route. Choosing a frame from the video inside the phone app is a different feature — it picks a frame that already exists, it does not upload artwork you made.
Ignore the 2 MB figure for Shorts. 2 MB is the phone limit, and the phone cannot upload a custom Shorts thumbnail. The number that applies is 50 MB. This is the same confusion that makes people compress ordinary video thumbnails far harder than they need to.
Never reuse a 16:9 thumbnail on a vertical video. It does not get letterboxed, and it does not get cropped by you — YouTube replaces it with a 4:5 image it generates, on three of the surfaces where people find videos.
Do not plan a test. Shorts are excluded from YouTube's Test & Compare, so there is no built-in way to compare two Shorts thumbnails on live traffic.
Questions people actually ask
What size should a YouTube Shorts thumbnail be? 2160 x 3840, 9:16, minimum height 640.
Can I add a Shorts thumbnail from my phone? No. Custom Shorts thumbnails are available only in YouTube Studio on a computer. Anything you can do in the phone app is frame selection, not a custom upload.
Is the limit 2 MB or 50 MB? 50 MB, because the desktop route is the only route. 2 MB is the mobile limit for ordinary video thumbnails.
Why do I not see a thumbnail option on my Short? The likeliest reasons are that the account is not verified, or that you are looking on a phone. Both are requirements rather than bugs.
Can I use my 1280 x 720 thumbnail on a Short? You can upload a 16:9 image, and on a vertical video YouTube will replace it with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages. So the picture you chose is not the one most people see.
Can I A/B test two Shorts thumbnails? Not with YouTube's own tool. Shorts are on the excluded list alongside scheduled live streams and Premieres.
I set one and nothing changed. How long does it take? YouTube publishes no figure, only that it may take time. What is actually documented about stale thumbnails is here.
